Frequently Asked Questions
🌿 Your Questions Answered
Starting therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you’re used to carrying things quietly or figuring it out alone. You might have questions, hesitations, or just want to know what it’s really like before you reach out.
This space is here to gently guide you. Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions I’m asked. If something’s still unclear, or you’re wondering if we’d be a good fit, you’re always welcome to reach out.
What’s it like to work with you?
Clients often tell me they feel deeply seen, gently challenged, and relieved to finally have a space where they don’t have to pretend. I’m warm, honest, and down-to-earth, not the silent therapist stereotype, and not the one who gives quick-fix advice either.
I’ll meet you where you are, and walk alongside you with curiosity, compassion, and care. Whether we’re exploring your relationship with food, boundaries, people-pleasing, or the voice of your inner critic, you don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to show up as you are.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is really about us getting to know each other. You don’t need to come with anything perfectly prepared. I’ll gently guide you through some questions about what’s been bringing you here, what you’re hoping for, and any fears you might have.
It’s completely okay if you don’t know where to start, most people don’t. There’s no pressure to share everything all at once. We go at a pace that feels safe for you.
I’m nervous – is that normal?
Absolutely. Most people feel unsure or anxious before starting therapy, especially if you’re used to putting others first or keeping things hidden.
It takes courage to reach out for support. And if you’re scared, it doesn’t mean you’re not ready. It just means this matters to you. You’ll be met with warmth, not judgment.
Do you offer online or in-person sessions?
Yes, I offer both. I work online via secure video calls, and I also have a cosy therapy space in Christchurch, Dorset.. You’re welcome to choose whichever option feels more comfortable, or we can use a mix of both.
Do you have any resources I can look at first?
Yes. I’ve created a few gentle, supportive resources to help you get started:
• The Self-Care Starter Pack – for anyone who struggles with people-pleasing or feels unworthy of self-care.
• A Bi-monthly newsletter, with reflections and practical tips to help you on your journey.
• The Blog – short reflections on healing, self-worth, boundaries, food, and the inner critic.
You’re welcome to download or read through these anytime.
Can I work with you if I struggle with binge eating or food issues?
Yes, this is an area I specialise in, and one I also have personal experience with. If your relationship with food feels chaotic, shame-filled, or confusing, you’re not alone, and it can change.
My approach is trauma-informed, non-diet, and free from weight stigma. We’ll focus on safety, self-compassion, and small, steady steps, not rules or restrictions. The first 6–8 weeks usually focus on building regular eating patterns that support your nervous system and your healing.
What do clients say about working with you?
Many of my clients say they feel more understood in our sessions than they ever have before. They describe our work as “life-changing,” “grounding,” and “like finally being able to breathe.”
Others have said:
“Julie didn’t just listen, she *got it*.”
“This is the first time I’ve ever felt safe enough to be honest.”
“It’s gentle work, but it goes deep.”

What if I don’t know where to start?
That’s okay. You’re not expected to have neat answers or a clear ‘story.’ Many of my clients begin with a tangle of thoughts, feelings, and questions, that’s part of the work.
You don’t need to be ready. You just need to be willing. We’ll take it from there, together.
