Ways We Learn to Cope.

What if the things you criticise yourself for once helped you survive?

Perhaps you’ve been told you’re “too sensitive”, “too emotional”, or that you just need more willpower.

Maybe you’ve wondered why you keep repeating the same patterns, even when you desperately want things to be different. Many of the ways we cope aren’t signs that something is wrong with us, it’s often a sign, that at some point, we found the best way we could to get through.

You might recognise yourself here if:

  • You put everyone else’s needs before your own.

  • You find it difficult to say no without feeling guilty.

  • You stay busy because slowing down feels uncomfortable.

  • You hide how you’re really feeling.

  • You turn to food, work, scrolling, alcohol or other distractions when life feels overwhelming.

  • You constantly try to “get it right”.

  • You feel exhausted but you don’t know how to stop.

If you’re recognising yourself, please know, your coping isn’t evidence you’ve failed. It’s evidence you’ve been trying to manage something difficult.

Imagine what it might feel like…..

Imagine not needing to be “on” all the time.

Imagine recognising your emotions before they become overwhelming.

Imagine feeling able to pause instead of reacting automatically.

Imagine trusting yourself to cope without constantly criticising yourself.

Healing doesn’t mean never struggling again, it means having more choices than the ones you’ve relied on for years.

How therapy can help

Together, we’ll become curious about ways you’ve learned to protect yourself, not to judge them, but to understand them.

When we understand why certain patterns developed, they begin to soften, From there, we can gently build new ways of responding that feel more supportive, sustainable and more in keeping with the life you want to live.
